Yam Dwar

Yam Dwar

Yam Dwar stands in Tibet (Tarboche) at roughly 15,500 feet elevation. The site lies 15 kilometers by road from Darchen. In Hindi, Yam Dwar means "the gateway of the God of Death". This spot marks where the Mount Kailash circumambulation begins. This gives it special importance in Hinduism. Anyone wanting to reach Shiva's home must walk through Yama Dwar. The Kailash Tour starts from this point.

People believe Yamraj himself guards Lord Shiva's home. We call the lord of death Yama, and we call the gate Dwar, so together it becomes Yam Dwar. Yama brings souls of the dead to his Yamlok and judges their good deeds and sins. Tibetan people believe Kailash houses 'Demchok' (their deity's name). Each year, they put up a new prayer flag-pole in Tarboche.

The colorful Tibetan flags carry deep meaning. Tibetans hang flags in a specific color order: "blue, white, red, green, yellow". They arrange these flags from left to right. The blue flag represents the sky, white stands for air, red shows fire, green symbolizes water, and yellow means earth. Together, these flags show the balance that creates life on earth. This entrance stops evil powers from passing through. This way, Yamraj shows his love for Lord Shiva by protecting Bholey's devotees. Hindu mythology says that just finishing the walk around Yam Dwar completes your Kailash Yaatra.

Hindu mythology teaches that after completing the Yam Dwar circumambulation, a person earns a place in heaven. Yam judges your actions after death. But people believe that when you pass through this dwar, Chitragupta erases all your bad deeds from the judgment book. Chitragupta works as Yamraj's accountant. He tracks all good and bad actions of every person. Hindu mythology contains many stories about this holy Yam Dwar that show how blessed and powerful this Dwar truly is. You must see it once.

Yam Dwar is said to be a mysterious place Many stories surround this place, such as:

  • People cannot stay at Yam Dwar. Stories say ghosts kill those who spend the night here. In earlier times, many people died from unknown reasons after staying overnight at Yam Dwar. Nobody knows why these people died.
  • A popular belief says you must never look back at the Yam Dwar once you cross it. You should always face forward and keep walking on the Kailash Parikrama route without turning around.

Location of Yam Dwar:

Yam Dwar sits about 15-20 kilometers from Darchen in Tibet, within the Tibetan Autonomous region of China. People believe South points toward Yamaraj (The God of Death), so Yam Dwar stands near the South face of Mount Kailash. This marks the entry point to Lord Shiva's home.

Significance of Yam Dwar:

Hindu mythology explains that Yamaraj (the God of Death) brings souls to his Yamlok and judges their actions after death. Chitragupta serves as Yamraj's accountant and records all good and bad deeds of every person. Belief holds that when you pass through Yamdwar, Chitragupta wipes away all your bad deeds from the judgment book and grants you a place in heaven.
